Methodology & sources

  • Official SBA Lender Detail reports. Every ranking is computed directly from the SBA 7(a) and 504 Lender Detail reports for FY2024, FY2025, and FY2026 year-to-date, retrieved August 7, 2026. FY2026 figures are partial-year — they are shown as standings only, and no growth is computed against them.
  • 504 third-party lenders. The 504 third-party-lender standings come from the official SBA 504 Third Party Lender Activity Report for FY2025, as of September 30, 2025. Third-party dollars are the private financing beside each SBA-backed 504 debenture; a year-over-year comparison awaits an official FY2024 file.
  • Approved dollars, not disbursements. Rankings use SBA-approved loan dollars and counts as reported in the Lender Detail reports. Approvals are a proxy for lending activity — some approved loans are later canceled or never fully disbursed.
  • SBA fiscal years. FY2024 and FY2025 are SBA fiscal years: FY2025 runs October 1, 2024 through September 30, 2025. FY2026 year-to-date covers October 1, 2025 through the retrieval date above.
  • Combined-view matching. The combined 7(a) + 504 view matches institutions on exact lender name and state and sums their program figures. There is no fuzzy matching: an institution reported under different name variants across programs appears as separate rows.
  • Lender counts. Active 7(a) lenders were effectively flat year over year: 1,389 approved at least one 7(a) loan in FY2025, down 10 from 1,399 in FY2024.
  • “New in FY25” and “New in FY26”. Chips are derived from the data, never curated: a lender with no FY2024 activity in the official reports is marked “New in FY25” (its percentage growth is left blank — percent change is undefined from a zero baseline), and a year-to-date leader with no FY2025 activity is marked “New in FY26”.
